You have several important sources of information to help you get started with Sametime on iSeries.
- The Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries Installation Guide is your main source of information about installing and configuring a Sametime server. It also includes several iSeries-specific Administration topics.
The Installation Guide (stinstall.pdf) is available on your Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM in the /Docs directory.
In addition to the .PDF version, a Domino® database version of the guide is also available in the doc subdirectory of your Sametime server's data directory after you install Sametime on your system.
- This Readme file (Readme.html) is intended to provide additional iSeries-specific information that is not
available in the Installation Guide. The information in this Readme file may have been updated since your media was created.
Visit the online Lotus documentation library to
view the latest information. Select "Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing for iSeries" to view the latest version of documentation
specific to the iSeries platform, such as this Readme.
- The Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) 6.5.1 Release Notes document was prepared for Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) 6.5.1 on Windows servers.
Though it has not been updated specifically for iSeries, many topics are useful and relevant for
all platforms.
The Release Notes document (Strn651.pdf) is available on your Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM in
the /Docs directory. After you install Sametime on your system, the database version of the
Release Notes (Strn651.nsf) is available in the doc subdirectory of your Sametime server's
data directory. The information in the Release Notes may have been updated since your media was
created. Visit the online Lotus documentation library
to view the latest information. Select "Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime)" to view the latest version of documentation
that is relevant for all platforms, such as the Release Notes.
- The Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Administrator's Guide is your main source of information about managing your Sametime
server. Some topics that are specific to iSeries platforms are discussed in the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for
iSeries Installation Guide.
The Administrator's Guide (sthelpad.nsf) is available on your Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2
CD-ROM in the /Docs directory.
If you have problems reading the NSF file from the CD-ROM, copy it to a read-write media (such as a local hard drive) and then open the file with your Notes client.
After you install Sametime on your system, the Administrator's Guide is available in the doc subdirectory
of your Sametime server's data directory.
- The Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) 6.5.1 Conversion Services Setup Guide (stconv.pdf) is available on your Sametime Volume 2 CD-ROM in the /STConv directory.
Lotus Sametime Conversion Services is an optionally installable component of Lotus Sametime that expands the capability of your Sametime server to display meeting attachments on the whiteboard of meetings, and improves convenience for your users. See the Setup Guide for more information.
- The Sametime Installer for Secure Desktops Readme (securedesktop_readme.html) is available on your Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM
in the /SecureDesktop directory.
The Sametime Installer for Secure Desktops (SISD) saves time by allowing users to install all of the Java clients on a workstation at once.
Normally, users must download each of these clients separately. SISD is particularly useful if your company's users do not have administrator privileges for their computers, preventing them from
installing the clients themselves. With SISD, the system administrator (or any user with administrator privileges) can quickly install all of the Sametime clients on users' machines.
- A list of Problems (SPRs) fixed in Sametime 6.5.1 is available on the Lotus Developer Domain (LDD) at the following Web site:
www.lotus.com/ldd/stfixlist.nsf.
- The Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries web site is updated whenever additional information becomes available. It also includes the list of supported iSeries models. Before installing and configuring your Sametime server, it is very important to review the latest information at the web site:
www.ibm.com/eserver/iseries/sametime
- Lotus Technotes are available to answer many of your questions. Visit the Lotus Sametime Support web site (www.ibm.com/software/lotus/support/sametime/support.html),
specify appropriate search text (such as "iseries" or the technote number), and then click GO.
Note Many of the documents are provided on your product CD-ROM in Adobe(R) Portable Document [PDF] format. The PDF files can be browsed with an Adobe Acrobat Reader(R). If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed already, current versions are available from the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com.

System Requirements | back to top
- The Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries Installation Guide (stinstall.pdf) contains the list of Sametime server
and workstation requirements. However, there may be updates or clarifications available. For a current
list of the system requirements, see
Sametime
for iSeries: System Requirements (technote #1092193).
- Be sure to install all of the required and recommended system fixes that are listed in
Sametime for iSeries: What System Fixes are Required?
(technote #1089996).
- Regardless of the size of your system processor, starting a Sametime server can stress your system
if it has limited memory or a small number of disk drives. Paging rates increase dramatically during startup. Therefore, we
now recommend a minimum of 512MB of memory and at least 4 disk drives. If your system does not meet these
minimum requirements or if there is significant non-Sametime activity, the Sametime server may fail to start due to internal timeouts.
After verifying that your system is sized correctly for your environment, you may still have occasional problems
with Sametime starting properly due to the large increase in system activity during the Sametime startup phase. See
Sametime for iSeries: Server Fails to Start (technote #1097835) for more information
about avoiding this problem.
- Always consult the service and support page of the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries web site for the latest information:
www.ibm.com/eserver/iseries/sametime/support.html

Java Developer Kit 1.4 required
- IBM Developer Kit for Java, 5722JV1 option 6 (1.4 JDK), is a new requirement for all Sametime 6.5.1
installations. This is in addition to 5722JV1 option 5 (1.3 JDK) which is still required. If you
are installing 5722JV1 option 6 for the first time, make sure that you reapply the latest Java
Group PTF to install the fixes applicable to option 6.
Requirements and setup for Save Whiteboard have changed
- The requirements for enabling the capability to save whiteboard contents have changed. The setup is much
simpler than in previous Sametime releases but OS/400 V5R2 or later is now required. If
the save whiteboard capability is critical to your installation,
you should upgrade to OS/400 V5R2 or later before upgrading to Sametime 6.5.1.
You still need to install OS/400 - Portable Application Solutions Environment (PASE), 5722SS1 option 33,
but you no longer need iSeries Tools for Developers, 5799PTL. See the
Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries Installation Guide for details about
a meetingserver.ini setting you must change to enable save whiteboard.
Additional requirement for enabling SSL
- If you are using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol
to encrypt connections with your Sametime server, you must install Cryptographic Access Provider 128-bit for iSeries, 5722AC3, on your iSeries server.
There is no charge for 5722AC3 but you must contact your Business
Partner or IBM representative to order it. If you are using SSL, do not upgrade to Sametime 6.5.1 until you have installed 5722AC3.
Installing Sametime for languages other than English
- Follow the instructions in the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries Installation Guide to install the Sametime
language files for your preferred language from the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) 6.5.1 Language Pack CD.
- The Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) 6.5.1 Language Pack CD contains files for two languages that are only supported on
Windows platforms: Russian and Polish. The Sametime for iSeries language pack installation
program does not support installation of Russian or Polish language files.
Installing Sametime on DBCS Systems
- Please review the additional notes for DBCS systems which are located in the
/ReleaseNotes_Asia directory on Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM.
- By default, four sets of single-byte character fonts are always installed with Sametime. These fonts are used for displaying characters on the
meeting room whiteboard. If you are running Sametime on a DBCS system (Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese), you should
copy two additional fonts to your system from the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM.
If you previously installed a Sametime 3.x release and copied the fonts to your system at that time,
you can skip this section. The fonts have not been updated for Sametime 6.5.1.
To copy the fonts, complete these steps:
- Insert the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM in the iSeries optical drive.
- Use iSeries Navigator to view /QOPT/C28CLML/DBCSFont in the Integrated File System or run the following OS/400 command:
WRKLNK ‘/QOPT/C28CLML/DBCSFont’
- Find the subdirectory of /DBCSFont that matches the language of your Sametime server. Use iSeries Navigator or the CPY command
to copy both of the files from the subdirectory on the CD-ROM to the following directory on your iSeries server: /QIBM/ProdData/Lotus/Sametime/Shared/ttfonts
- Run the Change Owner (CHGOWN) command to change the owner of both of the files to QNOTES.
Note The Sametime server always uses the font file that matches the CCSID of the
server. For example, suppose that the server CCSID is Korean but one of the meeting attendees is
using a Japanese client. If this meeting attendee attempts to write Japanese characters on the whiteboard,
the server will misinterpret the characters and display them for the other attendees as a meaningless string of Korean
characters.
Documentation Updates | back to top
This section describes corrections and updates to the product documentation.
Differences in Sametime for iSeries
This section of the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries Installation Guide states that Sametime 6.5.1 no longer requires the use of OS/400 - Portable Application
Solutions Environment (PASE), 5722SS1 option 33, in order to enable the capability to save the meeting room whiteboard. This is incorrect.
This option is still required if you intend to enable save whiteboard. However, the complex setup and management associated with the
Virtual Network Computing (VNC) display server is no longer required.
Configuring the server to send instant messages to clients that do not conform to the security level
This section of the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Administrator's Guide
describes how to update the stsecurity.ini file to specify the text of an instant message that is sent in response to login requests from clients that do not conform to the server's security level.
The section also indicates that you must save the stsecurity.ini file in UTF-8 format.
Here are some additional notes that are not included in the guide:
- Double-byte characters are not allowed in the message text or sender name.
- If you want to use accented characters (æ,é,ä,ñ, etc...) in the message text or sender name, you should use Notepad on a Windows client or server
to edit the file. When you finish making your desired changes with Notepad, select File-Save As... and specify
UTF-8 as the Encoding option, then save the file.
- It is recommended that you map a Network drive to make the stsecurity.ini file on the server accessible from your workstation. Then you
can run Notepad from your workstation and update the file directly on your iSeries server. Alternatively, you can copy
the file from the iSeries server to your client workstation using any convenient means (for example, dragging and dropping from iSeries
Navigator or FTP), edit the file on your workstation using Notepad, and then copy the updated file back to the server.
- When you have updated the file on your iSeries server, ensure that the file is owned by QNOTES.
To update the file ownership, run the following command:
CHGOWN OBJ('server_data_directory/stsecurity.ini') NEWOWN(QNOTES)
Ensure Sametime servlet access when Domino requires SSL for all connections
This section of the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Administrator's Guide
does not accurately describe the necessary steps for iSeries servers.
If you are setting up your Domino server to support SSL and plan to force all HTTP connections to the server to use SSL, you must configure the
Sametime server to support SSL for HTTP connections to servlets on the Sametime server. For the updated information, see:
Sametime for iSeries: Ensuring Sametime servlet access when Domino requires SSL (technote #1162027).
Installing both Sametime and Team Workplace (QuickPlace®) | back to top
-
If you plan to run Team Workplace (QuickPlace) and Sametime on the same iSeries server, be sure to install a release of Domino that is compatible with Team Workplace.
Team Workplace 6.5.1 requires Domino 6.5.1. For previous releases, you could only install one release of Domino within a single iSeries LPAR which made it necessary to
use the same Domino release for both Sametime and QuickPlace. However, all of the Domino releases supported by Sametime 6.5.1 are multi-version capable, that is,
multiple releases of Domino can be installed on the same iSeries server, within the same LPAR.
Therefore, while you must install Domino 6.5.1 in order to run Team Workplace 6.5.1, you can run
Sametime 6.5.1 on Domino 6.0.3 or 6.5.0 if you prefer. For the latest information, see:
Which Versions of QuickPlace and Sametime are Supported on a Given Version of Domino for iSeries? (technote #1085438)
Sametime for iSeries: Can Sametime and QuickPlace Be Installed on the Same System? (technote #1091353)
For more information about Domino multi-versioning, see "Using Domino for iSeries Multi-version Capabilities" in Chapter 12 of the Lotus book
Installing and Managing Domino 6.5 for iSeries.
For the latest information about implementing Team Workplace with Sametime, see
QuickPlace for iSeries:
Enabling Integration With Sametime (technote #7003786).
Known Problems and Recommendations | back to top
Save Meeting Room Whiteboard operation never completes
- The option for "Save Whiteboard" appears to be available to moderators of meetings on Sametime 6.5.1 servers by
default. However, unless you enable the capability, attempts to save the whiteboard contents will never complete.
You must change a meetingserver.ini setting in order for the save whiteboard function to work.
Do not change the setting until you ensure that the necessary prerequisites are satisfied (OS/400 V5R2 or later,
and OS/400 PASE option installed). If you change the setting and the prerequisites are not satisfied, you may encounter
server crashes.
See the
Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) for iSeries Installation Guide for details about
enabling save whiteboard.
If you do not plan to enable save whiteboard, you can change your server configuration so that the
option does not appear to be available. From the Sametime server home page, click Administer the Server.
Choose Configuration, Meeting Services, and General. Deselect the check box labeled "Allow people to save whiteboard annotations as attachments to the meeting."
Click Update and restart the server for the change to take effect.
Mixed release environment
- If there are other Sametime servers in the same community with your Sametime 6.5.1 server, all of the servers should be upgraded to Sametime 3.0a, 3.1, or 6.5.1.
- If you have applied Critical Fix 1 to the Sametime 3.x servers in the community, you will
likely encounter problems when the Sametime 3.x CF1 servers interact with your Sametime 6.5.1 server.
If you are not able to upgrade all of your servers to Sametime 6.5.1, see
Sametime 6.5.1: Errors occur when Sametime 6.5.1
interacts with Sametime 2.x/3.x server with Critical Fix 1 applied (technote #1159885) for a
detailed description of the problems and alternatives.
(If any of your Sametime 3.x CF1 servers are running on Windows, the technote includes instructions for using the file located in /STSecurity on
the Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) Volume 2 CD-ROM to correct the problem.)
- If you are using the Session Initiated Protocol (SIP), you must use the SIP Connectors that are delivered with Sametime 3.1 or 6.5.1.
You can use either the iSeries integrated SIP Connector or the standalone SIP Connector, but you must use the Sametime 3.1 or 6.5.1 versions for each SIP-enabled
Sametime community.
"Allow anonymous users" setting not properly upgraded from Sametime 2.5
- If "Anonymous users can participate in meetings or enter virtual places" is set to false using the Sametime Administration tool
for Sametime 2.5, the setting will not function correctly after upgrading to Sametime 6.5.1. This is caused by a change in how the
setting is stored.
In Sametime 2.5, the setting was stored in the
"Anonymous Users Can Attend Meetings:" field, located in the AnonymousAccess document of the Sametime configuration database (stconfig.nsf).
In Sametime 3.1 and later releases, the same setting is stored in a different field in the same document: "Anonymous Users to Community Service is Enabled:".
If "Anonymous Users Can Attend Meetings:" is set to false before the upgrade, it remains set after the upgrade and
will prevent anonymous users from attending meetings, even if the setting is changed with the
Sametime Administration tool.
To correct the problem after upgrading to Sametime 6.5.1, open the Sametime configuration database, edit the AnonymousAccess document, and change the value of "Anonymous Users Can Attend Meetings:" to true. Then
restart the server. The server will now function properly based on the settings in the Administration tool.

Integrated SIP connector not disabled when "Support external User" = False
LDAP server performance
- If your Sametime server uses an LDAP directory, you should not use Domino 6.0 or 6.0.1 to run your LDAP server.
There is a known issue with LDAP performance in Domino 6.0/6.0.1. This issue is corrected in Domino 6.0.2.
