Using Help resources in LWBCR

IBM(R) Lotus(R) Workplace for Business Controls and Reporting provides help resources for installers, administrators, and users of the product. The help resources consist of the following:

See the following topics for details.

Making the Information Center available

Information Center help for LWBCR is on the installation CD, at <CDRoot>\Install\aix\docs, and is available for the languages in which LWBCR ships.

The Information Center for each language consists of a series of HTML files, other files such as graphics, and a cascading style sheet.

  1. Expand the Information center into a folder on the LWBCR server (or to another suitable location), for each language used by your installers and administrators.
  2. Direct users to the Information Center home page, giving them the path information and the filename: index.html.

Using the Information Center

Following are some hints and tips for using the Information Center for LWBCR.

Supported browsers

The Information Center requires a browser that supports the following:

Examples of such browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher and Netscape Navigator Version 4.07 or higher.

It is recommended that JavaScript be enabled in the browser. If you use a different or earlier version of a browser, your pages may format differently and some functions may not work correctly. Also, the Information Center uses a Java applet for the collapsible Table of Contents. Not all browsers support Java applets. Therefore, there is an alternate HTML-based Table of Contents that you may select to use if you have trouble with the Java-based Table of Contents.

Some browsers, which do not provide a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) by default, may require that you install a JVM to use any Java-based code such as JavaScript or Java applets. Refer to support for your browser for more information.

Bookmarking help pages

You may want to bookmark a help page so you can return to it in the future. Bookmarking a Web page that uses frames is a quick two-step process:

  1. Right-click anywhere in the frame that you want to bookmark.
  2. Select Add Bookmark if you are using Netscape Navigator.
  3. Select Add to Favorites if you are using Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer.

Note: When it is appropriate, you may want to rename the bookmarked page to reflect the content; otherwise, you may replace any previous Information Center bookmarks. Some browsers automatically assign a unique name based upon the page name.

When you use your new bookmark, your browser opens the specific page that you selected when you created the bookmark without opening the other frames that were displayed originally.

Navigating the Information Center

The Information Center uses frames to help you navigate through the content. The navigation frame, on the left, displays the table of contents. The content frame, on the right, shows you the information. This is the frame you will most likely want to bookmark or print. The banner frame, on the top, is the Information Center masthead.

You can use the banner icons to select different ways of navigating the Information Center.

The Java-based and HTML-based tables of contents work somewhat differently.

Troubleshooting the navigation

The default table of contents uses a Java applet, which allows you to expand and collapse topics. If the navigation frame is blank, you may be using a browser that does not support Java or does not have Java enabled; or the Java Virtual Machine (for Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Virtual Machine) on your computer may not be the latest version.

Solution: Click the HTML icon in the banner to use the HTML version of the table of contents.

Printing topics

You can print individual HTML topics.

To print individual topics or articles:

  1. Navigate to the topic you want to print.
  2. Click in the main content frame, where the article is displayed, to bring focus to the frame.
  3. Click File --> Print.

Adjusting the browser font size

A cascading style sheet (CSS) governs the appearance of the Information Center. However, the text size remains flexible. The text is displayed in the size indicated in the user's Web browser settings.

The instructions for changing the font size vary between browser brands and versions. Consult the browser product documentation for instructions.

Making the user help available

Help for end users is installed with the user interface in the client. The help is in the form of JSP files that are linked to each portlet.

No further procedure is necessary to install help for the user interface.

Using the user help

Each page in the user interface has a question-mark icon in its header. Clicking this icon will display help for that page. The help consists of descriptions of the various fields to be filled in and the possible values that the fields may contain.

The pages themselves may contain labels and notices that tell the purpose of the page or give instructions on how to complete the information on the page.

User help is rendered as HTML. Users can navigate within the help system by clicking links.

Making the Release Notes available

The Release Notes file for LWBCR is on the installation CD. It is provided only in English.

Note: Release Notes are periodically updated as new information becomes available. Always check the developer site for the latest version:

  1. Expand the Release Notes into a folder on the LWBCR server (or to another suitable location).
  2. Direct users to the Release Notes file, giving them the path information and the filename.
  3. Note: After administrators review the Release Notes, they may want to make certain information available to end users, especially those workarounds having to do with data input and display.

Using the Release Notes

Release Notes are contained in an HTML file accessed from a Web browser.

The Release Notes contain essential information and details on installing and configuring Lotus Workplace for Business Controls and Reporting and its infrastructure. In addition, any limitations or problems are discussed along with possible workarounds.

Standard browser operations can be used on the Release Notes: clicking links to topics, using the Back and Forward buttons, and so on.

Since the Release Notes are contained in a single file, the entire set or a highlighted subset can be printed out using the Print menu item in the browser.
